"Earth is the cradle of the mind, but one cannot live in the cradle
forever."
-Konstantine Eduardovitch Tsiolkovsky, 1903
The National Space Society of Australia is the coming together of like-minded space enthusiasts
who share a vision for the future in which there is an ambitious and vigorous space program leading
to eventual space settlement.
In Australia we usually like to promote the Society as a "cause" rather than just a club,
although we value highly the club atmosphere and being able to share our hobbies and passion with
others.
Australian members join with over 25,000 members worldwide who believe that humanity's goal
should be to:
"Develop the nearly limitless resources of the Solar System and permit
the establishment of a space based civilisation. This civilisation is to be economically
self-sufficient and supported by a free enterprise system."
To this end the National Space Society (worldwide) promotes interest in space exploration,
research, development and habitation through events such as public and business conferences,
speaking to the press, library and museum exhibits, public outreach events, speaking engagements
with community groups and schools, and other pro-active events. We do this to stimulate advancement
and development of space and related applications and technologies and by bringing together people
from government, industry and all walks of life for the free exchange of information.
True to our characters as "Aussies" we have paraphrased the aims of the international arm of the
Society and adopted these aims as our own:
"To assist in bringing about a time when ordinary people have the
opportunity to work and live in space."
We do this by bringing about changes in social, economic and technological policies in all
sectors of government and industry and by keeping the general public informed on space activities
and opportunities. The Society attracts attention to space issues to educate government, industry
and the general public about the real potential of space.
As a non-profit organisation, the National Space Society of Australia draws its strength from an
enthusiastic membership who contribute their time and effort to assist the Society in pursuit of its
goals. Our members are part of a Society which also helps the individual, fascinated by the high
frontier of space, to question, discover and learn more about the promise and possibilities that
space holds for us all. Ad Astra!
Our Vision
"A Spacefaring Civilisation with people living and working in thriving
communities beyond Earth"
Our Mission
"To promote change in social, technical, economic, and political conditions
to advance the day when people live and work in space"
